Friday, February 1st, was the beginning of Black History Month. Black History Month is a celebration for African Americans and their great feats. Ruby Bridges is part of Black History Month. Ruby Bridges is a part of Black History Month because she was the first African American to attend an all white school. People say as she marched into that school, she marched into history. Martin Luther King Jr. is also a big part of Black History Month. He fought to end segregation. I really want to talk to you about Fredrick Douglass. He is known for being a heroic leader. On February 14th we had a video conference on “Fredrick Douglass: The Power of Literacy.” It was actually Fredrick Douglass’ birthday! Where you ask was this video conference coming live from? It was located in National Capital Parks in Washington, D.C. in Cedar Hill which is Fredrick’s house! We learned lots of new things. Here are some of the things we learned:
- Fredrick Douglass’ real name was Fredrick Augustus Washington Bailey.
- He wasn’t actually born on February 14th, but celebrated his birthday then because his mom always called him her little Valentine.
- He was born in 1818, but sadly died of a heart attack in 1895.
- Fredrick Douglass was best known for his heroic leadership.
- He fought for women’s right to vote.
- Last but not least, he loved to read and write, and had over 100 books in his library.
Here are some thoughts from my classmates about Black History Month.
I said, “I love Black History Month because African American’s get to celebrate their great feats!”
Anthony said, “I feel happy because I like Black History Month.”
Lindsay said, “I feel really joyful because I know African American’s can get to sit and join white people as equals.”
