It all began with an email from The Global Classroom Project where we found out about this fantastic project to help Mrs. Stadler and the students at Elkanah House Senior Primary, Cape Town, South Africa save the endangered rhinoceroses. We began by learning more about these creatures. Our teacher started a page called Save the Rhinos to help us research the reasons they are an endangered species. Some of the things we learned included, there are only five species left in the world and poachers kill them for their horns because they believe they are medicine. Then we discovered their horns are no different then our very own fingernails! With that information, we knew something had to be done. Next, we tried our artistic abilities in drawing and painting. We put these on our bulletin board so others would be aware of our plight.
Then, it was time to practice our persuasive letter writing skills. This is where we also found out kids really can make a difference. Two students from Fayetteville, Georgia started a non-profit organization called OMG or One More Generation to help save endangered animals. They have a short video explaining how they are collecting letters to send to President Zuma to help stop rhino poaching.
We are now awaiting the arrival of one of “The Travelling Rhinos” that has toured all the way from South Africa to visit us in Arizona. When it gets here we will be taking a mini-field trip with Mrs. Hamman’s class to show it around our desert backyard. After that we will put all we have learned together in a video that we will put on their wiki, The Travelling Rhinos Project.
