Earth Day Celebration!

Earth Day Celebration!

We decided one day was not enough, so we made it a week! Here are some highlights of the amazing things we learned and participated in:

1. Went paperless in our classroom for the whole week! We even took a spelling test using a computer and Spelling City. These ideas came from Mrs. Hamman’s Class.

2. Read tons of online articles about helping the environment. Some of these included Earth Day, Tech Trash, and Going Green.

3. Took a tip from TIME Kids News article ”Green Tips“, and set out to earn money through fundraising to plant a tree on our school campus. Here is a picture of the future tree planting site:

4. Wrote a letter to President Obama encouraging him to stop Uranium mining around the Grand Canyon. As a class we wrote a letter together. Then we each individually submitted the letter. We did this electronically through Sierra Club. This is our letter:

Dear Mr. President,

My name is __________. I am __________ years old and live in Apache Junction, Arizona. We recently heard about Uranium mining in the Grand Canyon, and we want to put a stop to it! We read an article to learn more about it. We ran into a jaw dropping fact that Uranium mining affects the watershed and the animals and people around it. This is polluting the watershed. We are also worried about the Kaibab squirrel that lives in the Kaibab Plateau. It will harm its habitat and become extinct.

Can you please tell the government to make a law that states no mining or logging in the Grand Canyon? We hope you appreciate our thoughts, and thank for helping us save the Grand Canyon.

Your concerned citizen,

(your name)

How did you celebrate Earth Day?

What changes can you make to help the environment?
